Implantable Contact Lens – EVO ICL

The Implantable Contact Lens (EVO Visian ICL ™) (see Product Brochure ) is a lens made of a highly biocompatible Collamer® material that is implanted into the eye, providing an alternative to glasses, contact lenses and Laser Vision Correction (PRK/LASIK) corneal surgery. The ICL is similar in design to implants inserted routinely during cataract surgery and is intended to be permanent, yet can be removed if ever necessary. The cornea is not altered, unlike PRK/LASIK procedures which irreversibly subtract tissue, permanently reshaping the cornea. Once implanted, the ICL better focuses light rays onto the retina resulting in clearer vision. (See: Nearsightedness) It is the only minimally-invasive foldable lens of its kind approved for the U.S. market by the Food and Drug Administration.

As a result of the unique foldable design, the ICL is inserted through a small opening in the eye and its placement in front of the natural lens and behind the iris provides a more aesthetically pleasing outcome. The procedure is painless and visual rehabilitation is typically rapid.

Richard A. Erdey, MD was an original investigator for Staar Surgical’s U.S FDA ICL Myopia Study since 1998. (View: NBC4 News – Dr. Erdey’s patient is first in Ohio to receive myopia ICL in 1998). His interest in this technology continued to build throughout the approval process and was driven by superior clinical outcomes, the stability and safety of the procedure and the high patient satisfaction rate. (Read: The Posterior-Chamber Implantable Contact Lens by Richard Erdey, M.D). Dr Erdey was among the first in Ohio to implant the ICL after U.S. FDA approval in 3/2006, (Read: Quick Fix for Nearsightedness) and has since been named a leading ICL specialist in the Great Lakes region. He continues to refine the procedure and offers advanced UBM imaging allowing even more accuracy when choosing the length of the ICL. Dr Erdey was the first in central Ohio to implant the EVO+ Visian ICL in March 2022. This latest U.S. FDA approved version adds a central and 4 peripheral fenestrations in the implant to facilitate more natural aqueous circulation around the lens.

The ICL allows patients to achieve excellent visual outcomes, particularly in those cases where laser vision correction is unsuitable because of moderate to severe myopia and / or corneas that are too thin to safely withstand laser reshaping. See: ICL/PRK/LASIK comparison

Since 2006, the ICL has been improving the vision of the bravest people in our nation under the harshest conditions imaginable. In fact surgeons in the US Military have implanted thousands of ICLs with results that are nothing short of heroic:

• More than 98% of patients had 20/20 visual acuity

• 100% were able to see better than before surgery wearing contacts or glasses

• 100% believe they function and perform better

If the ICL can meet the demands of soldiers in the US Military, imagine what it can do for you!

The ICL is the ideal choice for patients with an active lifestyle and those who cannot accept anything less than high-definition, high-quality vision and is often the preferred alternative to LASIK and PRK. The ICL has successfully been implanted in over 2,000,000 eyes worldwide and has been approved for use in over 75 countries, including Canada, the European Union, South Korea, China, Russia and Japan.
